Around the World in 128 Days - Sri Lanka

 Travel Day 85 - March 28, 2024 - 4,535 Steps

Entering the harbor at Columbo, Sri Lanka.

An apt name for a tgboat.

We were mooring at a container dock so the buses were parked very close to the ship.

Seen all around the world.

Tuk tuks are quite common and we quickly learned that the lines that mark the traffic lanes in Columbo are only suggestions as to where vehicles should travel.

It's a wonder the laundry ever dries, as the air virtually drips water.

With over 90% of the population being either Buddhist, Hindu or Moslem, shrines abound.

It's a cultural and economic jumble.

Today's excursion, another cooking experience. I'll jump ahead and say everyone of these dishes that we helped cook looked wonderful and tasted fantastic.

The ingredients varied from table to table, some being the same, some completely different.

Black pepper just as it was picked, still on the stem.

The hot peppers were so hot the assistant at our table used a towel to hold them while she sliced them.

We'll never look at a loofa sponge the same. That's because this is fresh luffa sliced and ready to go into the cooking pot.

Interestingly enough, though the food was certainly spicy, it was not "burny" at all. This photo also shows the ladles they use which are made from coconut shells and a stick.

It was a fun experience, even if everyone was dripping wet from sweat. That's the lady who runs the place in the red apron.

The chef's idea of food is that it should not only taste great, it should also be colorful. Here we see white, tan, brown, yellow, two shades of green and red.

A seventy year old fortune as written down by a fortune teller based on the Zodiac sign and name of of the person.

The old and the new exist side by side.

Official signs are in three languages.

When mama says ti hang on, you hang on.

Sellers set up on the dock across the gangplank to the ship.
