A Whale of a Day at Sea - Nov 23, 2019

Image
Linda likes to take "artsy" photos which always bring a smile to my face when I download her photos and discover one. This one even includes someone standing in one of the glass elevators. When we were in Antarctica people came down early for breakfast, but now that we are heading towards the Falkland Islands it would seem that many are enjoying some extra 40 winks. As you can see that doesn't include Linda and I. Because we are at sea today they have a number of presentations scheduled. What is nice is that they are almost all streamed to the rooms and with the big screen TV we have, plus the comfortable chairs, we usually opt to stay in the room and enjoy a hot cup of tea while watching the presentation. Plosive something interesting happens on our side of the ship it's just a few steps out to the balcony to see what it is. I had to laugh when I saw that this was a photo of the TV that she took. I think I'd better start calling her Ms. Albatross, thou...

The Site of Shackleton's Great Adventure on a Gray Day - Nov. 22, 2019

Black mountains, white snow, gray sky and water with the beautiful blue of the ice. What a view to awaken to. Thought I'd post some photos of the interior of the ship today. Everywhere there are the hand sanitizer dispensers that every ship has. We are staying on deck 8. The aft portion of deck 6 is the Aune dining area and the forward portion is the science center. The Roald Amundsen is an expedition ship, not a cruise ship, and hence the large area devoted to the science center. Besides the sanitizer dispensers there is also a hand washing station just before the entrance to the main dining area. The blue one is warn water, the green ring is soap and paper towels are above. Most people use the sanitizer, a number wash their hands and a few just walk right in ready to spread their germs. Our assigned table for the evening meal is the one to the left next to the window. We are as far away from the kitchen and buffet tables as possible. It was the last window table a...

Deception Island and a Tour of the Ship's Bridge - Nov 21, 2019

Linda went down to the Science Center this morning to check on her penguin. They are all still locked in the case drying. Hers is the chinstrap at the back on the right side, or at least she thinks it's that one. I can understand your confusion because if you've seen one chinstrap you have seen them all as they all look the same. We are spending the day inside Deception Island, which is a caldera of a volcano that has been invaded by the sea.  I took this photo later in the day after we had left the island, but at least it gives an idea of its shape. This view is looking through the narrow entrance with the snow-covered far side in the distance. There is also a "gotcha" in the entrance as there is a rock in the center of the entrance channel that is only 8 feet below the surface. In the late 1960s volcanic eruptions caused the abandonment of several scientific stations. We weren't the only vessel inside the cold era this morning. Lin...
