Around the World in 128 Days - Sea Day 2 of 4 - Ship's Laundry Tour

Travel Day 123 - May 5, 2024 - 7,765 Steps

Today's learning experience was centered around the housekeeping staff. These are the people that take care of the cabins, clean all the public areas of the ship and provide the laundry services.

The tour of the laundry facilities was great and the officer leading it spoke loudly and slowly and answered all questions in ways it was easy to understand.

Dirty sheets in the foreground, washed sheets piled high in the background.

Drying and folding the sheets is automated, but there is a new far better machine to be installed in the not to distant future. It was amazing how much handling by the workers is involved in the entire laundry process.

There are two sides to the laundry operation, the bedding, towels and dining items are handled together, then there is all the personal laundry items. Interestingly the work load for the two is about equal.

Linda was a snappy happy during the tour, while I was more of a videographer.

Spot treating of stains.

Stacks and stacks of folded clean sheets, pillowcases, towels, tablecloths, etc..

All personal laundry has a label affixed to the item.

Tailor department.

The chef's jacket was made from a table cloth that had a hole in it. Anything that is damaged is converted into something else if possible. Torn sheets are made into pillowcases for example. The laundry department is down on "C" deck, deep within the ship.

Meanwhile up on the cabin decks, bags of dirty bedding is collected to go down to the laundry.

Interesting afternoon presentation on the best astronomical happening of the past year.

The top rated one was all the fabulous images being taken by the James Webb Space telescope..

Nothing like tacos and enchilada soup soup on Cinco de Mayo. We ate the dessert flan before I remembered to take a photo.

Interviewing The Fly Rights. It was thought provoking to listen to them talk about some the disappointments they suffered through early in their careers that weren't based on their talent, but how things have changed for the better over time.

You'd think by now we would know that these performers who use the name of a famous singer to describe their act are very poor imitations of the original. But no, we were once again gullible and sat through another one where there was polite applause and thankfully no encore.
